Spondylosis is a wearing down or degeneration of the spine caused by wear and tear on the joints. Deterioration most frequently involves the cartilage and bones in either the cervical spine (joints of the neck), sometimes referred to as cervical Spondylosis or the lumbar spine, sometimes referred to as lumbar degenerative disc disease. Spondylosis can also affect the middle section of the spine, called the thoracic spine.
Ayurveda consider Spondylosis as a vata dominating disorder. The diagnosis and treatments differ according to the location affected. Cervical Spondylosis is commonly described as greeva graham and lumbar Spondylosis as kadi graham.
Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Avoid cold or cold showers
- Don’t use very soft or very hard mattrus
- Avoid very high or low pillow
- Sit in comfortable poster with back support
- Eat food with lots of nuts, milk products and fresh fruits
- Avoid sour food
- Expose to direct sunlight
Ayurvedic home remedies you can try:
- Use Cow’s ghee in your food. It is a best natural “Vata” reliever and gives nourishment to the nerves and other body parts.
- 1 tablespoonful of Turmeric should be consumed once every day, after boiling it in milk for half an hour. It is a very useful herbal treatment for cervical spondylitis.
- Consuming castor oil at night with milk or alone is a very useful.
- Massage with medicated seism oil.
- Sauna or steam heating also helps

Ayurvedic treatments depend mostly on aria effected and civility of the condition.
For Cervical Spondylosis therapies like sirovasti, greevavasti, nasyam along with internal medication and specific exercises are suggested.
For Lumbar Spondylosis therapies like kadivasti, Snehavasti, Abhyangam, elakizhi along with internal medication and specific yogic exercises are suggested.
